Spoleto Festival
Francis Menotti was born in Philadephia in 1938 and studied acting at the Chicago Goodman Theater. He also studied under Lee Strasberg in New York. He took part in the American Shakespeare Festival in his early acting career. He has played many roles in works by Gian Carlo Menotti, (he is well known for his role as Toby in The Medium) and was the narrator in Beethoven’s Egmont at the Tully Hall in New York and in Schoenberg’s Ode to Napoleon at the Charleston Festival. He also designed the costumes for the 1972 production of The Consul for the Teatro La Pergola in Florence. Like his adoptive father Gian Carlo, Francis Menotti soon demonstrated a rare gift for discovering new talents and good judgement regarding the international artistic scene, contributing in the organization of more than 52 Festivals in the United States, Italy and Australia. He has been at the helm of the Spoleto Festival for years, reviving it thanks to daring and spectacular artistic choices.
