Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore, one of the largest of our peninsula, develops on a surface of 21 square kilometers, (13 square miles) long about 65 kilometers (40 miles) with a width between 1 to 4 kilometers, (.62 to 2,5 miles) located at 194 meters (636 feet) above sea level, with a maximum depth of 372 meters (1220 feet).Its shores cover a total lenght of 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Canton Ticino in Switzerland to Sesto Calende (Va), reaching with its waters two regions: Piedmont and Lombardy, and three provinces: Novara, Varese, Verbano Cusio Ossola.

Lake Maggiore, or Verbano, is situated 194 meters above sea level and it is in the area the second largest with its 212 sq. kilometers reaching the maximum width of 12 km and a length of 66 km, while its coastal bounding is about 170 km. Its maximum depth is of 370 m., while the average is about 175 m. The lake goes back to Ice Era. On the eastern side its shores are in Lombardia, on the western they are in Piedmont while in the northern side they are part of the Helvetian Confederation (Switzerland).

Art and culture play an important part in Varese's history. This can easily be noticed by viewing the castles and villas, of which most were built by the Borromeo Family. A family well known for their rich, artistic flare in construction and design in what was then labeled " The Liberty Style". "The Liberty Style" represented for Varese the expression of the search of a new and modern style.
