Lake Trasimeno
|
Lake Trasimeno is the largest area of inland water in the Italian peninsula - 128 square km - and the fourth largest lake in Italy. It varies between 3 and 6 m deep and attracts a considerable variety of bird life in part because most of its shoreline is thick with reeds. There are three islands on the lake. The island of Polvese belongs to the local administration of Perugia. The Isola Maggiore covers an area of 23.2 hectares and is permanently inhabited, while the Isola Minore is uninhabited.

A picture made of lake and hilly landscapes completed by some human activities characterizing them, and at the same time an irreplaceable rest place for the migratory avifauna and a vital place for some important fish species. It is the unmistakable historical landscape reproduced in the paintings by several 15th century artists. Its delicate hydrologic and biological balance has always required its protection by man, which is still today necessary to the survival of the resource.

Trasimeno and its territory were part of Etruria and the tombs and Etruscan remains were found above all in the area of Castiglione del Lago. The Romanization of the area took place with the battle of 217 b.C when Hannibal eliminated the legions and 16.000 soldiers lost their lives in the hills above Tuoro and on the banks of the lake. Rome left its traces with its great hydraulic science to the Trasimeno with the construction of the first emissary destined to regularize the level of the waters and to prevent flooding, anticipating a technology which was repeated by Braccio Fontebraccio and again in our days.
