The Teatro alla Scala was founded, under the auspices of the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, to replace the Royal Ducal Theatre, which was destroyed by fire on 26 February 1776 and had until then been the home of opera in Milan. The cost of building the new theatre was borne by the owners of the boxes at the Ducal, in exchange for possession of the land on which stood the church of Santa Maria alla Scala (hence the name) and for renewed ownership of their boxes. Designed by the great neoclassical architect Giuseppe Piermarini, La Scala opened on 3 August 1778 with Antonio Salieri's opera L'Europa riconosciuta, to a libretto by Mattia Verazi............

The Teatro Lirico was inaugurated in 1993, at the end of an extremely long construction period. The competition announcement involving the realization of a building to replace the ancient Teatro Civico, destroyed by bombardments in the old town during the Second World War, dates back to 1964. In 1967, the plan by Ginoulhiac and Galmozzi, architects from Bergamo, is approved and the construction of the modern building, which has an area of 5,000 square metres, begins: the foyer; 1650 seats including stalls, I circle and II circle; the ample stage and the orchestra pit. In the years following the inauguration, rehearsal rooms, workrooms, warehouses and office premises are made. Latest achievements are the foyer renovation, the opening of the bookshop, the bar and the refined restaurant of Teatro Lirico.

Umbria Jazz Festival 2008 is, without any doubt, one of the most important event dedicated to jazz in Europe. Since 1973, when was inaugurated the first edition of the Festival Umbria Jazz, the biggest jazz artists have come to Perugia: during the '70 Dizzy Gillespie, Sam Rivers, Herbie Hanckok, Enrico Rava, Miles Davis, Lionel Hampton and during the more recent editions of the festival Dedee Bridgewater, Gilberto Gil , Milton Nascimento, Terence Blanchard, Paolo Conte, Vinicio Capossela, Nicola Arigliano, Miriam Makeba, Renzo Arbore and its Swing Maniacs, Sergio Cammariere, The Coolbone Brass Band of New Orleans, Lyle Henderson & Emmanuel Gospel Singers.

The first edition of the San Remo Song Festival was held in 1951, a few years after the end of World War II. The festival was broadcast on the radio and there were only three singers. The audience kept on dining all the time. On the following year, the number of participating singers increased to five and then to ten in 1953. The Festival gradually gained prestige and the introduction of television in 1955 was pivotal in its definitive recognition. The following years are considered as the time of the great Italian singers and songwriters, such as Nilla Pizza, Teddy Reno, Claudio Villa, and Domenico Modugno, who won the Festival in 1958 with his world-wide famous song "Nel blu dipinto di blu" (also popularly known as "Volare").
