Banks & Change
In Italy banks are generally open from 8.30 to 13.30 and from 15.00 to 16.00 (with slight
variations according to the cities) and are closed on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. The Euro is the official currency in Italy from 1° January 2002: 1€ = 1.936.27 Italian lire. Not only Italy, but also other 11 countries of the European Union use the euro as official currency. The Euro is divided into 100 cent. Coins of the value of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cent, 1 euro, 2 euro and bank notes of the value of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euro are available. While the bank notes are identical on both sides, the coins have a side equal for everybody and the other side has the typical features of the country where the currency is in use. For information, consult the Euro section of the site of the European Union: http://europa.eu.int/euro
